Scene of the Blog-- Trish of Hey Lady! Whatcha Readin'?

This week, we're heading to Northern California to take a look at a very popular blogger's space, Trish of Hey Lady! Whatcha Readin'? I love reading Trish's blog (although I've learned not to drink anything while I'm doing it). Her sense of humor is wonderful, and she has a true talent for drawing her readers into her conversations. I also enjoy following her on Twitter because of her thoughtful advice and willingness to help anyone with a question.

Enough of the intro already. I know you're wanting to take a look at her space and read what she has to say about it! (Remember, you can click on the photos to view them full size.)

My blogging set up is what you might call ghetto.

There are two places where I blog: in my bedroom at my "desk", and in the living room, sitting on the couch, with the laptop either sitting on the coffee table or perched on my legs (thus the cardboard--the first ghetto thing!), so the laptop fan can breathe.

Neither set up is particularly comfortable or ideal, but in a less-than-1,000-square-foot-house, all space must be utilized. That's why a friend and I made those shelves in the closet, the first shelf at desk level and the second shelf above that for the TV to sit on. Okay, maybe I didn't help make the shelves, but I reimbursed my friend for the cost of the wood, so I participated, gosh darnit!

The chair at my desk is an old chair from a law office I used to work at. The law office was moving locations and got rid of a bunch of old furniture, so I grabbed the glass coffee table you see in the living room and the desk chair you see near my PC. The reason I picked that chair?? It was the least broken of all the chairs they were getting rid of (ghetto thing #2). I always thought I'd get a new chair, but the chair hasn't fallen apart, so I've been too lazy to buy a new(er) chair.

Anyone else have ghetto working spaces?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't think Trish's space is "ghetto". I think she's made a wise use of space in her small house. (If I can turn a closet into an entertainment center, she can turn one into a desk!) I will admit, though, that I'd like to send her a lap desk from Levenger's so she can retire the piece of cardboard!

Thanks so much for letting us take a peek inside your home, Trish. It's always fun to take a look at fellow book bloggers' creative spaces.

Tune in next Wednesday when Scene of the Blog will visit with Lilly of Reading Extravaganza!

  1. It all looks so tidy! I'm beginning to be ashamed of my desk, covered in clutter, surrounded by piles of books!

  2. I like your space and everything is so neat and clean. I wouldn't dare show photos of my living room!! What a great idea to change your closet into an office!

And my husband and I have lots of gently used stuff.

  3. Enjoyed Scene of the blog as usual - off to visit Trish :)

  4. I think it looks great. Using the closet was an ingenious use of space!

  5. LOL! The back of my desk chair has been loose for probably a year or so now, I'll stick it back on in about a day it will fall back off, so most of the time it's on the ground. I was going to get a new chair for my birthday in September but didn't find one I liked, must look again.

  6. That's not ghetto! I have an old lapdesk thing I did my homework on as a kid and it's exactly the size of the laptop so I use that to let my fan breathe (I want one of the Levenger Laplanders so bad though!). Ooh! Like the shelf idea. One of the rooms I'm going to use for either the library or the guest room in my new house has two closets. Might have to steal your idea!

  7. For a small house, it's very clean and you've made very clever use of your space! Actually the cardboard is a great idea, I need something to let my laptop "breathe" but can't afford anything fancy.

  8. It doesn't look ghetto to me either. I love the cat on the shelf in the closet!

  9. In spite of the "ghetto" cardboard, the writing space is so clean looking...neat! I really like the use of the closet.

Trish is making the rounds...first its the spotlight on bookstores, now the writing space...what's next?!

  10. Trish obviously hasn't visited a ghetto lately because her space is far from it.

I like this series. It's fun to see where the creative juices flow.

  11. @ farmlanebooks - My areas do NOT look like that all the time. I think what happened is I had cleaned for company, and knew I needed to take pictures of my space, so I was all, OH! Take pictures NOW! lol

@ Beth F - Yeah, using the closet actually worked out very nicely. It's not the same as having a "real" office, but it's good enough for me! :-)

@ Dorte H - Thanks for leaving a comment! I don't think I've seen you around before, so I'll try to stop by your blog and say hi (assuming you have a blog).

@ Amy@TheSleepyReader - You're so awesome, Amy! "Ingenious." I'm going to be rolling that around in my head all day!

@ Alea - LOL. Sometimes it's just easier to deal with what you've got since you know all the quirks. Right?

@ Ladytink_534 - Levenger Laplander?? Never heard of it! From the sounds of it, I'd best not go check it out because I'll probably want one.

@ Meghan - Glad you think the cardboard's a good idea. :-) If it ever wears out, I'll be able to get another one for free!

@ bermudaonion - LOL. I didn't realize the cat was on her perch. I used to store stuff there, but the cat made it clear she liked it up there, so I took everything down, threw some old scarves up there and called it a day.

@ Serena - Hopefully I'll be able to get some new posts up on my own blog here pretty soon. :P Though guest posting is always so much fun!

@ Ti - Okay, maybe it's not ghetto, but it's not elegant or pretty. It's just functional. Blah.

  12. Oh you should see the state of my office chairs! (The only reason I have two is that one was rescued from a street corner. The other one is more comfortable but much shabbier looking! Plus the cats need somewhere to sleep while I'm working.)

I think the closet setup is ingenious. Great post as usual!

  13. Huh, just realized I repeated Amy's ingenious comment. Apologies for not being very original!

  14. Actually, I really like the shelves - it's a real creative use of space!

  15. Trish- You are right! Though, one time, I did fall backwards off my chair after putting too much pressure on the back and then it came off and I went with it!

  16. Why has no one yet commented on the wine storage in the blogging space? Because really, more of us need something like that!

    ReplyDelete
  17. @ avisannschild - You can be unoriginal so long as you keep calling me ingenious. :-)

@ Stephanie - Thanks! The shelves are very nice and I stained them so they're nice and smooth.

@ Bodeuedd - Thanks! I appreciate your comment.

@ Alea - *snort* My chair's not that bad yet, but if I ever fall off, you'll be the first to know. We'll commiserate.

@ Jeanne - Hehe...you really notice things! Now if only I could keep the chocolate in as close range as the wine... ;-)

  18. Very nice looking space. I especially like the looks of your comfy couch. I would not be able to get much done if I sat on it to blog. I'd be curled up for a nap. Nice to see where your creativity resides.

  19. looks good to me...i mainly blog up in my office/craft room. sometimes i blog in the kitchen if i'm cooking...but that's pretty rare around these parts...lol.

  20. It looks great and comfy to me, Trish! Thanks for sharing!

  21. Great space Trish! I'm sure I saw that couch in your Twilight discussion video. Right?

  22. Love the use of space - I live in a real small house and need to incorporate some space-saving ideas.

I use a piece of wood to let my laptop breath - it is cut to the same size as my laptop and works well.

  23. I immediatly noticed all the wine and wondered if she drank wine while sitting on the couach with the ghetto laptop holder. haha!
Love the space! Great use of closet space in the bedroom.

  24. Serena--I'm not the one keeping this feature going...all of you are. I just "slap up" what y'all send me!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Now I can picture you in your blogging space! How fun!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Your space looks wonderful Trish - not ghetto at all! I love how you made use of the closet - an how your kitty makes use of the shelf too!

  27. Another fun post! These just satisfy my inner peeping tom so much! And I'll have to check out her blog -- I don't think I've come across it yet. And it doesn't look ghetto -- just like a wise use of space. Thought I can't imagine blogging on a low coffee table like that! I need a desk!

  28. Jenners--you cracked me up with your "inner peeping Tom"! I'll have to remember that and use it. LOL

  29. Trish, please tell me that tv is somehow attached to the wall.. you live in earthquake country. The first thing I thought was- yikes that tv would take her out in an earthquake!

Great post! I loved seeing your space!

  30. I love the shelves and the organization. Great ideas! Trish, your computer chair is way less ghetto than mine. My aching back is begging me for a better chair (ours is some cheap, bottom-of-the-line walmart type special).

  31. I think it's very neat. I don't have a very big home, and everything seems cluttered in my place.
